Cancer: How diamonds help in its detection

Researchers at the University of Warwick have designed a new diamond-based sensor that they say could revolutionize the way tumors are detected.

The team says the new non-toxic and non-radioactive device is "highly sensitive" and uses "the unique properties of diamonds to detect metastatic breast cancer."

Metastasis is the process by which cancer spreads in the body.

How does the diamond sensor detect metastatic cancer?

The diamond sensor works by detecting a magnetic fluid - a tracer - that is injected into the patient during or before breast cancer surgery.

According to the researchers, the sensor can then "localize the fluid and identify lymph nodes that need to be surgically removed to stop the spread of cancer."

The research was published in the journal Physical Review Applied.

"By designing the new diamond-based sensor, we were able to reduce the size of its head to just 10 mm, meaning it is the first diamond sensor that can detect fluid while being small enough for endoscopic use," said first author Alex Newman.

Professor Gavin Morley, lead author and team leader at the department, said diamonds can detect magnetic fields "thanks to the colour centres present in diamond, called nitrogen vacancy centres" ./CNA
