How many years must pass after quitting smoking to reduce the risk of cancer?

Every habit we acquire takes some time to become an experience, but much more time to get rid of, especially if it is considered harmful to health.

Of course, if it is associated with addictive substances, such as nicotine in cigarettes, quitting smoking becomes even more difficult.

However, when smokers manage to quit, they enjoy multiple benefits, including protection against the occurrence of cancer.

More specifically, quitting smoking is associated with a reduced risk of cancer 10 years after quitting, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open.

The researchers studied 196,829 cancer cases during a median follow-up of 13.4 years. Participants who had completely quit smoking had a lower risk of cancer compared with continuing smokers, with hazard ratios of 0.58, 0.73, 0.86, and 0.80 for lung, liver, stomach, and colon, respectively.

Although the risk of cancer increased slightly for the first ten years after quitting, compared with continued smoking, and then decreased over time, after 15 or more years, the risk reached 50% of that associated with continued smoking.

Lung cancer, which is directly linked to smoking, declined three years earlier than other types of cancer and had a larger relative decline. The largest reduction in lung cancer risk associated with smoking cessation was seen before age 50 compared with age 50 and older.
