Don't ignore the warning signs of cardiac arrhythmia

Cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat, occurs when the electrical impulses that coordinate your heart's rhythm don't work properly.

This can cause the heart to beat too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.

Some arrhythmias are harmless; others can be life-threatening, increasing the risk of stroke, heart failure, or sudden cardiac arrest. The most common type is atrial fibrillation (A-fib), which affects millions of Americans — many of them without knowing it. The risk increases with age, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and excessive alcohol use.

Classic Symptoms

Rapid heartbeat

Dizziness or lightheadedness

Difficulty breathing

fatigue

Chest pain

Fainting (syncope)

Experts say these less obvious signs can also indicate arrhythmia:

Panic attack.

Sudden changes in pace can cause adrenaline surges that mimic anxiety.

Confusion.

Low oxygen supply to the brain can cause memory problems or mental fogginess, which are often confused with dementia in the elderly.

Mixed.

Irregular heartbeats can lower blood pressure, reducing blood flow to the stomach.

Frequent urination at night.

A 2022 study linked waking up two or more times during the night to structural heart changes seen in a-fib.

Persistent cough.

Some arrhythmias affect the vagus nerve or blood flow to the lungs, causing coughing./ CNA
