Brain/ 5 ways to become more… smart!

The brain needs constant exercise. Every day it is faced with different “exercises” and problems that it is called upon to solve. Essentially, it is we ourselves who determine what will occupy it. Some of our thoughts “sharpen” it and some others “fog” it.

Is there a way to become more or less intelligent? And yet, there is!

We deprive the brain of the sleep it needs

Sleep is not “wasted time.” It is the time when the brain processes, repairs, and “rewires” the day’s experiences. Sleep deprivation has been shown to impair performance, affecting our attention, memory, mood, and judgment. Even a modest reduction in sleep hours can have serious consequences.

We consume alcohol.

The reduced clarity of thought due to alcohol consumption is immediate, but the damage can be long-lasting. Research shows that frequent consumption significantly increases the risk of brain damage and is associated with markers of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

The brain lacks structure.

What does this mean? The brain needs goals, a schedule, and boundaries. Without them, we become inactive or procrastinate. A 2021 study found that students with high levels of procrastination had significantly lower levels of executive functioning.

Our brain keeps "bad company"

The mind adapts to its environment. If we feed it gossip, toxicity, and low-quality stimuli, it gradually falls into line with them. Studies on adolescents have shown that emotions are “contagious.” Negative moods are more easily transferred within groups. The environment we choose is part of our brain’s “diet.”

What can we do to become more…smart?

-Pay more attention to the duration and quality of our sleep

-Filter our friends and influences

-Do not abuse.

-Set boundaries and deadlines

-Change the way we talk to ourselves about our abilities

All of these are useful tools that lead us towards clearer thinking and a "smarter" life! /CNA
