"Albania is an autocracy"/ Xhaferri: Even partners admit it between

Democratic Party MP Besart Xhaferri stated in an interview with A2CNN that the country is in autocracy also because of the opposition, after they surrendered the Parliament in 2019 by burning their mandates.

Xhaferri said that the opposition should increase the pressure for territorial and electoral reform, the action will be spontaneous and the scandals a serious reaction. The democratic MP said that Albania is a Prime Ministerial Republic.

" In the macro strategy that the opposition must do is to reform the situation, the Constitution, the state. We are in this situation because of our own faults that we gave the parliament in 2019 and it furthered the autocracy. Since 2019, we are not a parliamentary republic, but a prime ministerial one. The parliament that should have stopped the executive has not been there since 2019. We must mobilize a different, united opposition. We need an electoral, territorial reform. There will no longer be two or three parliamentary groups. The committees will make the request for reform. This time, normality will return to the ranks of parliament, outside of it there will be opposition actions that will be affected by spontaneity and scandals that will require a more serious reaction. The DP can demand interpellation, reforms, and in today's conditions, an autocrat will not give them. We must increase pressure from both internal and external factors ," said Xhaferri.

The Democratic MP also revealed details from the meeting with representatives of the US embassy, ??who he said acknowledged behind the scenes that Albania is now an autocracy.

"The US asked us what expectations we have from parliamentary life and I told them there are none. Today Rama is also the mayor of all of Albania. I told him that territorial reform is necessary, open lists. We did not talk about the leadership of the opposition. The US partners, although they did not admit it in words, admitted in lines that Albania is an autocracy."/ CNA
