"We have a skeletal parliament, without staff"/ Berisha: Increasing

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated today that of all the changes made regarding parliamentary working conditions, the increase in MPs' salaries was wrong.

In his speech during the Training Program for new DP deputies, in addition to the messages, Berisha also focused on several issues, including the lack of staff for deputies.

Berisha said that this situation makes the parliament skeletal and that professional dignity is needed for the new representatives of the citizens.

"In this context, an organization, a major transformation of the work of parliament must take place. You are deputies with your hands in your pockets. You are people without any staff, which cripples the work of parliament.

You are people without staff, whether for constant contact with voters, or for supporting your activities in parliament.

This is a skeletal parliament, so to speak. When I imagine that 220 thousand salaries are paid in the administration and all that, and you see parliamentarians without any assistants, or at least two or three occupying an office together... this is like saying parliament is a sham.

Therefore, I believe that it is necessary to create conditions for parliamentarians to fulfill their profession with dignity.

It was wrong, I tell you here, to increase the salaries of MPs. Not that they have any, let's say, stratospheric salaries. But much more right would be even greater spending on parliamentary staff. To make the parliament the institution it should be", said Berisha. /CNA
