Erion Veliaj will remain in prison/ Mentor Kikia: Release could destroy evidence

The Supreme Court decided on Tuesday to keep Erion Veliaj in prison, upholding the GJKKO Appeals decision.

In an interview with CNA TV, analyst Mentor Kikia links the Supreme Court's decision to his continued tenure as mayor of Tirana.

 Kikia emphasized that Veliaj's return to the country's first municipality could be a good opportunity to destroy evidence.

" The third instance decision against Veliaj was the final blow to his hope of gaining not just freedom, but at least a lighter measure, perhaps even house arrest. The politically overloaded Veliaj case continues, he is still the mayor of Tirana and why he has been in prison for 5 months. An approach that seemed reasonable to me by lawyer Genc Gjokutaj, who thought that being still legally mayor has prevented Veliaj from winning in his efforts to gain freedom, since the moment he can return to freedom, he must return to office. This is interpreted as an opportunity to influence the investigation to destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses. The third attempt is over and Veliaj will have to wait for the end of the investigation in terms of arrest in prison ", Kikia said in the interview for CNA.

 

Analyst Kikia, in his interview with CNA, also spoke about the release of former MP Ervin Salianji, an issue he said has great political implications.

Kika stated that Salianj's imprisonment was a political cost not only for the former MP, but also for the Democratic Party.
