More Berisha than Berisha, more democrat than democracy

More Berisha than Berisha, more democrat than democracy

When the "independent" candidates of these elections, those who have changed a dozen parties like scarves on a suit vest, come out and pretend to be more democratic than the Democrats, and the Democrats who do not support them are called "pseudo-democrats" or pretend to be more Berisha-like than Berisha himself, you become convinced that Albanian politics is no longer an arena of ideas, alternatives, and the confrontation of values, but a spectacle without morality and open bargaining.

Are these independent candidates independent of who they are? Of the party? Maybe yes, but not out of the habit of selling out to whoever offers them the most.

Many of them are the product of a transition that has turned political conviction into an instrument for personal survival and profit.

Today they talk about "the cause", tomorrow they will pretend to be leaders and call for "unity", the day after tomorrow for "resurgence" and in the end they end up in some government office that they "scolded" yesterday.

The irony is that the very ones who have swapped ideals like scarves for suit vests claim to teach others what "loyalty to the cause" is.

These are neither the voice of the citizen nor the hope of the opposition. They are random recruits in the struggle for power, who wear the next uniform every day: today blue, tomorrow gray, the day after tomorrow "independent", next week pink.

And when someone does not join them in this dirty game, they declare them “enemies of democracy,” “traitors to Berisha,” or “tools of the government.” The irony is that the very ones who have served everyone accuse those half-witted democrats of disloyalty.

"Pseudodemocrats" are not those who refuse to become a facade of the political game, but those who use the flag of democracy to hide behind the next bargain and support ridiculous figures like immoral candidates.

In this grotesque mess, their "independence" is as real as their "morality."

Unfortunately, when politics is filled with such grotesque figurines, who no longer have a face, conviction, or morality, kill hope, and serve to shrink a party that was born as hope for change, democracy becomes a masquerade.

Democracy does not need "more democratic than democrats", nor "more Berisha-like than Berisha", but people who know how to remain themselves even when the government does not smile at them./ CNA
