Fire in northwestern Turkey / Over 2,000 people evacuated from their homes

More than 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale on Monday, where a fire had been raging since midday, with flames reducing homes and vehicles to ashes and poisoning dozens of residents who inhaled smoke.

"As a precautionary measure, 2,090 citizens were evacuated from high-risk areas by sea and land," Canakkale Governor Emer Toraman said, adding that 77 people who inhaled smoke were taken to hospitals where they are being treated.

The fire, spread by strong winds, engulfed communities near the Hellespont (an area also known as the Dardanelles), a busy strait, including the highly touristic village of Guzalgiali, where the population swells significantly during the summer.

In this community, houses and parked vehicles were set on fire among burning trees, according to visual material from Turkish media.

More than 760 firefighters have been deployed to the site and are operating with the support of ten aircraft, nine helicopters and more than 200 vehicles, according to authorities.

Turkey, which experienced its hottest July since systematic meteorological records began 55 years ago, has been grappling with massive wildfires in recent weeks. Fourteen people lost their lives battling the blazes in July in the western part of the country./ CNA
