Trump: I agree with Zelensky, but the war should never have happened

US President Donald Trump today criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the leader's resistance to giving territory to Russia, saying he disagrees with Zelensky.

"I agree with Zelensky, but, you know, I disagree with what he's done. I disagree very, very strongly. This is a war that should never have happened," Trump told reporters at the White House.

In an effort to broker an end to the conflict, Trump announced last week that he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

Trump has said the meeting will touch on some territorial exchanges for the betterment of both countries, a proposal that Zelensky strongly opposed on Saturday.

"Of course, we will not give Russia any prize for what it has done. The Ukrainian people deserve peace. All partners must understand peace and that the Ukrainians will not give their land to an invader," Trump said.

The president's comments come after his special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow last week, during which the Russian leader reportedly shared a ceasefire proposal that would include the withdrawal of the Ukrainian military from the Donetsk region, allowing it to come under Kremlin control, along with Luhansk.

Zelensky has not been invited to the summit with Putin. Trump said Monday that he hoped a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, with or without his involvement, would follow Friday's meeting in Alaska. /CNA
