2 deaths and 12 hospitalizations/ Italy is investigating poisoning cases in

Two separate outbreaks of botulism poisoning have troubled Italy in recent weeks.

In Calabria, the most serious case resulted in two deaths and 12 hospitalizations, while other cases of botulism have been reported in Sardinia. All of these cases can be traced to contaminated food, including industrial and home canned goods.

Botulism is a rare but serious illness that can cause breathing problems, muscle paralysis, and death. People can become infected with botulism by eating home-prepared foods that have not been properly canned, stored, or fermented.

The Sardinia outbreak has been linked to contaminated industrial sauce.

The outbreak in Calabria, which began between August 3 and 5 in Diamante in the province of Cosenza, involved 18 people who ate sausage and turnip sandwiches bought from a street vendor. /CNA
