Heavy rains in Japan/ Several missing reported, search begins

Several people have been reported missing after torrential rains on Japan's southern island of Kyushu caused flooding, landslides and travel chaos on Monday.

Authorities said evacuation orders were issued for tens of thousands of people in Kumamoto and six other prefectures in the region. Troops were deployed to provide drinking water to residents in affected areas.

Rescuers searched for the missing, including a man who disappeared while three members of a family waited in a car to head to an evacuation center as the area was hit by a landslide.

In Kumamoto, an elderly woman was found inside a vehicle that fell into a river. Three others were reported missing after falling into swollen rivers.

Two other people were also reported missing in nearby Fukuoka prefecture.
