Jellyfish 'invade' the sea/ France's largest nuclear power plant

Four of the six units of the Gravelines nuclear power plant in northern France have been shut down due to a massive and unexpected presence of jellyfish in the water pumping stations used to cool the reactors, electricity company EDF announced.

"Medusa is forcing the largest nuclear power plant in France, which is also the largest in Western Europe, to close," the France 24 network reported.

Three of these units closed late Sunday night, while the fourth closed on Monday.

As EDF assures in a post on its website, these outages of units 2, 3, 4 and 5 had no impact on the safety of the facilities, the safety of personnel or the environment.

It is reported that the beaches around Gravelines, between Dunkirk and Calais, have seen a significant increase in jellyfish in recent years due to warming waters. /CNA
