Disappointed Albanian: Israel's Netanyahu is denying the war in Gaza

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has accused his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, of "denying" the consequences of the war in Gaza.

Albania announced on Monday that his country would recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, following similar steps by the United Kingdom, France and Canada.

Albanese said frustration with the Israeli government had played a role in the move, saying Australians "want to see the killings and the cycle of violence stop".

Israel, under increasing pressure to end the war in Gaza, has said that recognizing a Palestinian state "rewards terrorism" and Netanyahu called the decision taken by Australia and other allies "shameful".

Albanese said the decision to recognize a Palestinian state was made after commitments were made by the Palestinian Authority (PA), which controls parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, that Hamas would play no role in any future state.

The move has caused mixed reactions in Australia, with the Executive Council of Australian Jewry calling it a "betrayal" and some Palestinian activists saying it does not go far enough./ CNA
