The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has declared Wednesday, April 17, a day of mourning, after the murder of two women within a few days.

"Tomorrow will be a national day of mourning in Kosovo, but our society will be in mourning every day as long as there are murders of our women and girls!" wrote Osmani on the Facebook social network.

On Tuesday morning, a woman was killed in Peja by her husband.

Shkodran Nikqi, spokesman for the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Peja, said that the suspect was arrested and that his weapon was confiscated.

The murder in Peja is the second case in four days in Kosovo where women were allegedly killed by their partners or ex-partners.

On April 12, a 21-year-old woman was killed inside the office of the Center for Social Work in the southeastern city of Ferizaj, while her 15-year-old brother was also injured.

A 36-year-old man, the ex-husband of the victim, was arrested and detained by the authorities as a suspect in the murder.

Since 2010, 57 women have been killed in Kosovo, according to the data of the Kosovo Police.

President Osmani condemned the murder in Peja, stressing that everyone has a duty to protect women and girls.

"Unfortunately, today we all woke up in the morning with the terrible news of the murder of a woman by her husband. This terrible phenomenon that is hurting our society and our country, this femicide which unfortunately has reached extraordinary proportions, must be stopped at all costs", said Osmani.

The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, also reacted to the murder in Peja, who said that despite "measures taken, campaigns initiated with the aim of gender equality, murders against women are continuing".

She said that she has called a meeting for today with the Minister of Internal Affairs, the chairmen of the councils, the acting chief prosecutor and the director of the Kosovo Police and "also in another meeting the meeting of the inter-ministerial group" to deal with the issue of the killing of women./ CNA
