FBI launches investigation into bridge collapse in Baltimore

The FBI launched an investigation after the collapse of the bridge at the end of March in Baltimore, east of the United States, into which a container ship collided, as the Washington Post wrote today. 

In an email to AFP, the FBI confirmed it was "on board the Dali vessel" to conduct "forensic police operations" there.

In late March, the 300-meter-long container ship hit a pier on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, on the US east coast, causing it to collapse.

The bodies of two workers who were working on the bridge for road maintenance have been recovered, while four other people who remain missing are presumed dead.

The US paper said this "criminal investigation" aims to determine "at least in part" whether the crew departed knowing the ship had serious mechanical problems, according to two US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Singapore-flagged Dali had sailed from the port of Baltimore on a 27-day voyage to the port of Colombo (Sri Lanka).

After notifying authorities of a loss of power due to propulsion problems, the ship struck the bridge.

The ship has been stranded under the wreckage of the bridge, blocking some of the shipping at one of the country's busiest ports.
