Debates in the Security Council/ Israel and Iran, accusing each other

The head of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned that the Middle East region is facing the real threat of a large-scale conflict.

He made these warnings during a meeting of the Security Council on Sunday, in which Israel and Iran accused each other of threatening peace in the Middle East and each called on the institution to impose sanctions on the other. .

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region are facing the real threat of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to escalate the situation," Guterres said at the meeting called after Iran's missile and drone attacks on Israel.

Guterres called for restraint, stressing that "neither the region nor the world can afford more war".

But Israel and Iran accused each other of destabilizing the situation in the region.

"The masks are falling off. Iran, the number one sponsor of terror in the world, has shown its true face as a destabilizer of the region and the world," said Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan.

"Masks are falling and gloves must be worn," he said, calling on the Security Council to "take action."

Erdan asked the Security Council to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization and "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it is too late."

In particular, he called for a mechanism to be activated that would allow countries that signed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal – from which the United States withdrew in 2018 – to reinstate international sanctions on Tehran.

"We have a collective responsibility as members of the Security Council to ensure that Iran complies with the Council's resolutions and stops violations of the Charter," said US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood.

He added that in the coming days, the US will "explore additional measures to hold Iran accountable."

On Saturday evening, Iran launched a direct attack on its sworn enemy, Israel, launching over 300 drones and missiles.

Almost all drones and missiles were destroyed by Iran and other countries, including the US, Jordan and Britain.

Iran said the attack was carried out in response to the deadly airstrike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

For this attack, in which seven members of the Revolutionary Guard were killed, including two generals, Iran has blamed Israel.

During the extraordinary meeting, Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, insisted that the Islamic Republic is "exercising its inherent right of self-defense."

"The Security Council has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security," said Iravani.

Therefore, Tehran "had no choice" but to respond, he said, adding that his country "does not seek escalation or war", but will respond to any "threat or aggression".

In his speech, he also hurled accusations at Israel.

"It is time for the Security Council to take its responsibility and address the real threat to international peace and security," Iravani said.

According to him, the Council "must take urgent and punitive measures to force this regime to stop the genocide against the people of Gaza".

The increase in tensions between Israel and Iran is happening at a time when the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union - in Gaza has entered its seventh month.

The war began after the radical Palestinian group attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapping 250 others. Meanwhile, as a result of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, more than 33,000 people have been killed, most of them women and children, according to local health authorities.

Since the revolution in Iran in 1979, Tehran has considered Israel an enemy and called for its destruction.

Until now, Tehran had refrained from a direct attack on Israel, but the two countries have confronted each other through third parties./ REL
