The Israeli army said Sunday it will soon call up two reservist divisions for operations in Gaza, where it is fighting Hamas, the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union.

"In accordance with situational assessments, the Israel Defense Forces will call up two brigades of reservists for operational activities on the Gaza front," the army said, without providing further details.

Earlier this month, Israel withdrew part of its forces from Gaza, saying troops would prepare for other operations in that territory, including the southern Rafah area, where more than 1 million Palestinians have taken refuge, fleeing other war zones.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to evacuate civilians from Rafah before launching any offensive aimed at destroying Hamas battalions, but has done little to ease international concerns about the planned attacks.

The war in Gaza has been fueled by Hamas attacks on Israeli communities in border areas on October 7, killing around 1,200 people and taking around 240 hostages.

Israel believes 130 hostages are still in Gaza while at least 34 are dead.

As a result of the Israeli offensive against Hamas in Gaza - with the aim of destroying the group - more than 33,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed.

Iran supports Hamas and several other militant networks in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, which carry out frequent attacks against Israelis./ REL
