The UN calls for restraint/ Guterres: The region faces the risk of a destructive

Following Iran's attack on Israel, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for de-escalation.

He made this statement at the United Nations Security Council meeting.

Guterres said it is time to show maximum restraint, while calling it vital to avoid actions that could lead to military confrontations in the Middle East.

"It is time to withdraw from the difficult terrain where the situation is at the moment. It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East. Civilians are already bearing the brunt of the situation and paying the highest price.

We have a shared responsibility to actively engage all stakeholders to prevent further escalation. We have a shared responsibility to ensure an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the unimpeded delivery of aid.

We have a shared responsibility to stop the violence in the occupied West Bank, de-escalate the situation along the Blue Line and restore safe navigation in the Red Sea. We have a shared responsibility to work for peace. Regional and indeed global peace and security are being undermined hourly. Neither the region nor the world can afford more war", the Secretary General of the UN emphasized./ CNA
