Drastic decision by the Lebanese government / Bans Hezbollah's military

The Lebanese government has announced that it has banned Hezbollah's military activities, describing them as illegal, and is calling on the Iran-backed group to hand over its weapons.

The announcement, which comes a day after Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel, represents a drastic change in the state's policy. Hezbollah's presence as a military group has been part of Lebanon's landscape for more than 40 years.

The government also ordered the army to prevent attacks against Israel and begin confiscating weapons, a move that risks confrontations with heavily armed militia.

"The state declared its absolute opposition to any military action launched from its territory and affirmed that the decision for war and peace is in its hands, which requires the banning of the party's activities and its obligation to surrender its weapons and engage in political work ," said Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

It is unclear whether the government can unilaterally ban the group without the approval of parliament, where Hezbollah and its allies hold a number of seats. The government statement said it rejects and condemns the rocket attack on Israel claimed by Hezbollah on Sunday, which it said contradicts the principle that the decision on war and peace belongs solely to the Lebanese state.

The Prime Minister's full statement:

The Cabinet, in accordance with the Constitution, the National Accord Document and the Government Ministerial Declaration, and after rejecting and condemning the alleged missile launch operation by Hezbollah yesterday, which contradicts the exclusive authority of the Lebanese state alone, without any other entity, over decisions on war and peace, as well as contradicting Lebanon’s refusal to engage in the ongoing regional war, and constitutes a violation of Cabinet resolutions and an overriding of the will of the majority of Lebanese, thus undermining the credibility of the Lebanese state, and after consideration,

The cabinet decided:

First: The Lebanese State declares its absolute rejection, without room for ambiguity or interpretation, of any military or security operation launched from Lebanese territories outside the framework of its legitimate institutions, and affirms that the decisions of war and peace are exclusively its own, which requires the immediate cessation of all security and military activities of Hezbollah as outside the law, and obliges it to hand over its weapons to the Lebanese State and limit its activities in the political field within the constitutional and legal frameworks, in a manner that sanctions the exclusivity of weapons in the hands of the State and reinforces its full sovereignty over all its territories. The Government calls on all military and security agencies to take immediate measures to implement the above, and to prevent the conduct of any military operation or the launch of missiles or drones from Lebanese territories, and to arrest the violators in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.

Second: A request to the Army Command to immediately and decisively continue with the implementation of the plan it presented at the Cabinet session on 16-2-2026 in the part related to the restriction of weapons north of the Litani River, using all means that ensure the execution of this plan.

Third: Based on its unwavering commitment to prevent Lebanon from being drawn into any conflict amid the tense regional situation, the Cabinet demands that the guarantor States of the Declaration of Cessation of Hostilities obtain a clear and definitive commitment from the Israeli side to stop all aggression against all Lebanese territories, while affirming Lebanon's full and definitive commitment to all the provisions of the Declaration in a manner that protects peace and stability. The Cabinet declares its full readiness to resume negotiations on this issue with civilian participation and under international auspices.

Fourth: A request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants to intensify diplomatic contacts with the international community and brotherly and friendly states to stop Israeli aggression and implement relevant international resolutions.

Fifth: A request to the Ministry of Social Affairs to provide shelter for the displaced and provide them with food supplies and essential items, in cooperation with the relevant ministries, the High Relief Council, the Council for Development and Reconstruction, the Southern Council, and the Disaster and Crisis Risk Management Unit at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. /CNA
