VIDEO/ Chaos at Middle Eastern airports after Iranian attacks, Dubai and Abu

Passengers were forced to evacuate Dubai International Airport on Sunday after a reported attack left four staff members injured. The incident came in a fresh wave of Iranian attacks on travel hubs in Gulf states close to the US, following the death of an Iranian supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes.

Dramatic footage showed passengers fleeing corridors filled with smoke and debris, while authorities confirmed another explosion occurred near the airport later in the day. The attacks also hit Abu Dhabi, Doha and Manama, causing the closure of a major air corridor over the Middle East and the cancellation of flights by major airlines.

Dubai, the region's largest tourist and commercial hub, was almost empty over the winter weekend, a stark contrast to its normal tourist flow. Many residents were forced to stay in underground garages or flee to Oman for safety. On the Palm Jumeirah, an explosion hit the Fairmont Hotel, causing significant damage.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports temporarily suspended all flights. International airlines including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and British Airways canceled or postponed their flights as a safety measure.

The Iranian attacks mark a new wave of tensions in the region and have created uncertainty for travelers and tourists in the Middle East, challenging the Emirates' well-known image as a safe and luxurious destination./ CNA
