Britain's Ministry of Defense said on Sunday that a Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone heading towards Qatari territory, as regional tensions escalate sharply after major US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
In a statement, the ministry said the Typhoon, part of the joint UK-Qatar Typhoon Squadron, was carrying out a defensive air patrol on Sunday when it used an air-to-air missile to destroy the drone.
The defensive action comes amid one of the most dramatic escalations in the Middle East in years, after US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes deep into Iran on Saturday.
Iran is retaliating with missile and drone barrages against Israeli territory and US bases across the Persian Gulf, including facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
