Attacks in Iran and the assassination of Khamenei/ Trump: The country's new

A day after attacks on Iran killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, US President Donald Trump has stated that the country's new leadership wants to speak with him and said he has agreed to do so.

"They want to talk and I've agreed to talk, so I'm going to talk to them. They should have done it sooner. They should have given what was very practical and easy to do sooner. They waited too long," Trump told The Atlantic .

Asked whether his conversation with the Iranians would take place today or tomorrow, Trump said he could not give details yet. He noted that some of the Iranians involved in the negotiations in recent weeks were no longer alive.

"Most of those people have left. Some of the people we were dealing with have left because this was a big blow. They could have made a deal. They should have done it sooner. They were very nice," Trump said.

Yesterday morning, in a video posted on social media, the US president called on the people of Iran to rise up against the current regime once the bombing campaign ends.

"Now you have a president who is giving you what you want. So let's see how you respond. Now is the time to take control of your destiny and unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is within your grasp," he said.

In another interview earlier, Trump said that 48 Iranian leaders were killed during the ongoing US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

"It's moving forward rapidly. Nobody can believe the success we're having, 48 leaders are gone in an instant. And it's moving forward rapidly," Trump told a Fox News reporter. /CNA
