British Defense Minister: Our military bases were endangered by Iranian missiles

British Defense Minister John Healey said today that British troops and civilians in the Middle East are at risk due to indiscriminate attacks by Iran.

Healey said in an interview with the BBC that personnel at a British military base in Bahrain, very close to where the retaliatory attack took place on Saturday, were at risk when two missiles from Iran were fired towards Cyprus.

"At that Bahraini military base that was hit by missiles and drones yesterday, we had 300 British personnel, some of whom were less than 100 meters from the attack ," the British minister said.

However, he added that he was confident that Iran's ballistic missiles were not targeting British military bases. The minister said these attacks showed how British military personnel and civilians were at risk from a regime that he said was increasingly indiscriminate and controlled in its attacks.

Healey said that while the UK had not taken part in the attacks, it shared the same overarching goal as all allies in the region and the US, that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon. He did not give details of whether the UK would be involved in further strikes, but said it was trying to prevent further regional escalation. He also said the UK was reviewing the level of the terrorist threat.

UK government officials are also drawing up plans to evacuate British nationals from the Middle East, although this is unlikely to be imminent due to the closure of airspace across the region. Since Saturday, Iran has launched a wave of missile and drone attacks against targets in Israel, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq. /CNA
