Three American service members have been killed and five others seriously wounded, marking the first American casualties of ongoing US operations against Iran, the US Central Command announced on Sunday.

The casualties were announced on the second day of attacks by the US and Israel against Iran, which have plunged the Middle East into a new and unpredictable conflict that has already led to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The US military's Central Command said in a statement on Sunday that American troops also suffered injuries, none of which were serious.

"Several others suffered minor concussion injuries - and are in the process of returning to duty. Major combat operations continue and our response efforts are ongoing ," Central Command said in a statement on "X."

Officials said the identities of the American service members killed in action will be withheld until 24 hours after next of kin are notified. The United States and Israel continued strikes across Iran on Sunday, the second day of a campaign that U.S. President Donald Trump says is aimed at toppling Iran's government.

Iran has responded to the attack with strikes targeting US assets across the Middle East, raising fears of a wider regional war. Iran has vowed revenge for Khamenei's assassination and the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on the country. /CNA
