Scary warning: Mass evacuations in the Middle East will be needed if nuclear

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has warned that a mass evacuation of cities across the Middle East could be necessary if civilian nuclear power plants are attacked leading to a radiological release.

Opening the quarterly meeting of the IAEA board, Grossi expressed disappointment that an agreement between the US and Iran on Iran's nuclear program had not been reached by the parties in their recent negotiations. He had participated in the talks himself, offering technical assistance.

"The use of force has been present in international relations since recent times. This is a reality, but it is always the least preferred option. I remain convinced that the lasting solution to this long-standing dispute lies at the diplomatic table. When it comes to nuclear issues, a crystal-clear understanding of the scope and verifiability of an agreement is essential. Diplomacy is difficult, but never impossible. Nuclear diplomacy is even more difficult, but never impossible. It is not a question of if, but when we will gather again at the diplomatic table. We simply need to do so as soon as possible," Grossi said.

Earlier, the IAEA stated that there is no indication that the Israeli and American attacks on Iran have hit any nuclear facilities, although it was announced that it has not yet contacted Iran's nuclear authorities.

Grossi called for maximum restraint in all military operations, given the nuclear sites in Iran and other countries in the region, including Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. /CNA
