Ukrainian troops halt Russian advance in Sumy region

The head of the Ukrainian army, General Oleksandr Syrsky, said that Ukrainian troops have stopped a Russian advance in the northeastern border region of Sumy.

Visiting the frontline on Thursday, Syrsky said the battle line has stabilized and that the Russian summer offensive in the region has been "suppressed."

But he added that he had personally visited the area's fortifications and discovered that they were in urgent need of reinforcements.

His comments confirm previous statements by Ukrainian officials that Russian pressure in the region was easing. However, the situation remains "fragile," Border Guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko said earlier this week.

Sumy borders Russia's Kursk region, parts of which the Ukrainians temporarily occupied in 2023 during their surprise attack, before being forced to withdraw almost completely a few months later. /CNA
