Greece faces fires

Greek firefighters are battling a blaze that has engulfed homes near the seaside town of Palaia Fokaia, 40 kilometers south of Athens. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of residents in four nearby settlements.

Aided by eight aircraft, five helicopters, 90 firefighters were deployed to the Palaia Foakaia area in an attempt to extinguish the fire that spread rapidly due to strong winds, burning down houses.

It is still unclear how many houses were burned in this area.

Greek television showed a helicopter dropping water, as large plumes of smoke were seen across the area.

Greece is facing high temperatures today that have reached up to 38 degrees Celsius.

In recent years, Greece has felt the economic and environmental impact of frequent wildfires and floods. According to scientists, these events have become more frequent due to climate change.

Greece has spent hundreds of millions of euros to compensate citizens and farmers for damage caused by extreme weather events. The state has also purchased new equipment for firefighters to deal with fires, which are made more difficult to extinguish by high summer temperatures.
