Trump: Putin may have territorial ambitions beyond Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump said today that it is possible that Russian President Vladimir Putin has territorial ambitions that extend beyond Ukraine, leaving open the possibility of escalating the situation elsewhere than Moscow.

The statement was made during a press conference at the end of the NATO summit in The Hague.

Trump said he plans to speak with Putin soon to end the war in Ukraine.

"Zelensky wants the war to end and I plan to talk to Putin about that very soon," Trump said.

Although he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump clarified that the issue of a ceasefire did not come up in their conversation.

Trump welcomed allies' commitment to dramatically increase defense spending and urged member states to invest in serious military hardware, not bureaucracy. He said the new resources should strengthen deterrence to avoid wars like Russia's invasion of Ukraine./CNA
