Switzerland will begin exploratory talks with the European Union on a non-binding partnership on its participation in arms procurement projects, the Swiss government said, as the neutral Alpine country seeks closer security ties with the bloc.
Such partnerships are a prerequisite for non-EU countries to engage in partnership projects with the bloc, the government said, adding that the move is consistent with neutrality and will help strengthen its defense capabilities.
"Switzerland is interested in greater cooperation with the EU, especially in armaments," the announcement said.
It was noted that talks should begin as soon as possible.
A partnership would allow Switzerland to negotiate better conditions for its industry to participate in EU arms procurement plans.
"To date, the EU has established such partnerships with a number of countries and further partnerships are envisaged," the government states./CNA
