2027 French elections/ Le Pen calls on Bardella to prepare for campaign

Far-right Marine Le Pen, who was banned from running for public office for five years by a court, has asked her party's chosen one Jordan Bardella to prepare to campaign for the 2027 French presidential election.

"I accept that I cannot be a candidate. Jordan accepts that he must intervene. I have personally asked him to think about this and prepare for this possibility," Marine Le Pen said in an interview published in the newspaper 'Valeurs Actuelles'.

It is the first time she has publicly mentioned the possibility of the party leader running for president in her place.

A court found Le Pen guilty in early April of misusing EU funds. The most controversial part of the sentence is that she was banned from running for public office for five years. Her sentence took effect immediately. /CNA
