White House: July 9 deadline for trade tariffs could be extended

US President Donald Trump may extend the upcoming deadline for lifting tariffs, the White House said.

The July 9 deadline for a trade deal "is not critical," spokeswoman Caroline Levitt told reporters during a briefing.

"The president can simply offer these countries a deal if they refuse to do it with us within the deadline, and that means the president can choose a reciprocal tariff rate that he believes is beneficial to the United States and to the American worker. That is a decision that the president has to make," Levitt said.

Trump announced at the end of May that he would impose 50% tariffs on the European Union.

Two days later, the European Union agreed to postpone that tariff until July 9, after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said an extension was necessary to reach a good deal./CNA
