Trump and Starmer agree on need for 'urgent action' in Gaza

After British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met US President Donald Trump in Scotland today, a Downing Street spokesman said the two leaders discussed "the horrific scenes in Gaza and agreed that urgent action is needed to end the suffering, which has reached new depths".

The spokesman added: "Humanitarian aid should be allowed in on a large scale and at a rapid pace. They pledged to work together to end the misery and hunger and to continue to press for the immediate release of the remaining hostages, who have been held so cruelly for so long."

They reiterated their calls for an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for peace in the region, and Prime Minister Starmer welcomed the president's efforts to secure this and shared the plans he is working on with other European leaders to bring about a lasting peace.

Regarding Ukraine, the spokesman said the two leaders agreed "that they must maintain momentum to end the war with Russia, including by exerting economic pressure on Putin to come to the negotiating table without further delay."

And on the recently reached EU-US agreement, they said that "leaders noted how beneficial the agreement is for people working in the UK and the US and agreed to continue working together to further build their close and strong economic relationship."
