Three killed in armed attack in Sweden

Three people were killed in a shooting in the Swedish city of Uppsala on Tuesday, local police confirmed, adding that an investigation has been launched into the shooting.

Police are searching for a suspect in the murders, the TT news agency reported.

Earlier, Swedish police said they had received calls from citizens who had heard gunshots in the city center, and said emergency services had immediately rushed to the scene.

"Three people have been confirmed dead following the shooting... Police are investigating the incident as a homicide," investigators said in a statement.

Witnesses told Swedish broadcaster SVT that they heard five shots and saw people in the area running for cover.

Ten people were killed in February in the Swedish city of Orebro in the worst massacre ever recorded in the country, in which a 35-year-old unemployed man opened fire on students and teachers at an adult education center.

Sweden has suffered for more than a decade from a wave of gang-related violence, which has included an epidemic of gun use.

The Nordic country's minority right-wing government came to power in 2022 with a promise to combat gang-related violence.
