Global air travel traffic is expected to increase even during 2023

During 2022, global air travel traffic grew to almost half the level of the period before the pandemic, according to data published on Monday by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Since the start of the pandemic, airlines have experienced a steep decline in travel in 2020 and 2021, and lost tens of billions of dollars. Profits began to recover in 2022 as air traffic began to recover.

Global traffic increased in 2022 reaching 68.5% of the pre-pandemic level, while in 2021 it had reached 64.4%.

“This sector is now much stronger than at the start of 2022 as most governments lifted the travel restrictions they had put in place during the year and people took advantage of the return to their freedom to travel. This trend is expected to continue this year, despite the overreaction of some governments to the reopening of China," he said.

"It is vital that governments learn the lesson that travel restrictions and border closures have little positive impact in terms of slowing the spread of infectious diseases in our globally interconnected world."/VOA
