The historic Yeni Camii (New Mosque), located in the center of the city of Malatya in southeastern Turkey, was destroyed in the earthquake that shook the country and claimed over 1,500 lives and left more than 9,000 citizens injured and almost 3,000 buildings destroyed, according to the preliminary results so far.

The mosque, which was restored and opened last year, was hit by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck at 4:17 a.m. local time.

Built on the site of the "Hac?Yusuf" Mosque, the New Mosque was destroyed in the earthquake of March 3, 1894, which Malatya called the "Great Earthquake", and its reconstruction continued with the help of the public and ended with the contributions of Sultan Abdülhamid II.

Furthermore, in the earthquake of March 14, 1964, the mosque was severely damaged. It suffered cracks in some of its walls and the upper stones fell. Then it was restored again by the General Directorate of Foundations and large minarets were installed.

In ?anliurfa, teacher Raziye Tanlap lost her life after parts of the mosque's minaret fell on her during the earthquake. Tanlap was taken to the hospital by medical teams, but could not be saved despite medical intervention./ CNA.al
