Turkey declares seven days of national mourning

Turkey has announced seven days of national mourning, after the earthquake that hit the country on Monday morning.

This was announced by the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said that the Turkish flag will be flown at half-mast until Sunday, February 12, in all institutions inside and outside the country.

More than 2,300 people have been killed in Turkey and Syria by the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck both countries early Monday morning and aftershocks.

Hundreds of people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble and the death toll is expected to rise.

According to Turkish authorities, ten Turkish cities were affected by the earthquake. They are: Gaziantep, Kahramanmarashi, Hatai, Osmanije, Adijamana, Malatia, Shanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilisi.

While in Syria, according to the authorities there, the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus were hit by the earthquake.

Turkey is located on one of the largest seismic lines and is often hit by earthquakes./ REL
