Turkey: Mourning for thousands of earthquake victims

As a result of the devastating earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border, according to the latest official data, more than 4,200 people lost their lives (February 7, 07:00) and more than 18,000 people were injured. As rescue teams continue to work to pull people out of the rubble, the death toll could rise even further. The situation is dramatic, people are afraid to return to their homes because of the subsequent earthquakes.

The earthquake caused tremendous damage in southern Turkey and northern Syria. Whole neighborhoods have been flattened. Thousands of people are now homeless in the winter when the temperatures are below zero degrees.

Shumica e njerëzve në atë kohë ishin ende në gjumë. Të hënën pasdite pati edhe një goditje pasuese prej 7,5 ballë po në të njëjtin rajon. Gjithashtu janë regjistruar shumë goditje të tjera pasuese. Lëkundjet e tokës janë ndjerë deri në Liban dhe në Qipro e madje këto lëkundje janë kapur edhe nga aparaturat matëse në Groenlandë.

Presidenti i Turqisë Rexhep Tayp Erdogan shpalli një javë zie kombëtare në vend. Ai e cilësoi këtë si tërmetin më të fuqishëm që nga viti 1939. Atëherë në provincën lindore Erzincan patën gjetur vdekjen 33.000 vetë.

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, expressed himself "deeply affected" by this catastrophe. The UN is ready to provide emergency assistance, Guterres assured.
