SpaceX has been accused of illegally firing eight workers who were critical of its multi-billionaire boss, Elon Musk.

A complaint by a US labor agency says employees sent an open letter to the firm's executives in 2022 detailing workplace concerns.

A regional official's complaint to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) accused SpaceX of violating workers' rights under federal labor law, which allows co-workers to ask for better working conditions.

Lawyers for one of the former employees, Deborah Lawrence, said they have accused SpaceX of having a "toxic culture" where harassment is tolerated.

In a statement seen by Reuters, Ms Lawrence said: "We wrote the open letter not out of malice, but because we care about the mission and the people around us."

If Space X fails to settle the case, it will be heard by an administrative judge, whose decision can be appealed to the board and then to a federal appeals court. A hearing is scheduled for March 5.

If the NLRB finds that the layoffs violated labor law, it can order workers reinstated and back pay.

Musk's companies have been accused of violating workers' rights before.

In October, the NLRB charged X, formerly known as Twitter, with illegally firing an employee for tweets that challenged the company's back-to-office policy.

Electric car maker Tesla has also faced several NLRB complaints, which included allegations of racial discrimination at its factories.

In August, the US Department of Justice sued SpaceX, alleging that it discriminated against refugees and asylum seekers in employment practices./ CNA
