The United States has not seen acts in the Gaza Strip that amount to genocide, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said late Wednesday, after South Africa referred Israel to the International Court of Justice for "genocide" during its war in the Palestinian enclave.

"These are accusations that should not be made lightly... we are not seeing any action that could constitute genocide. This is the position of the State Department," said Miller during the press conference.

He was asked about South Africa's request, which on Tuesday asked the International Court of Justice to issue an order that Israel has violated its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

The court has decided to examine the request of South Africa in hearings on January 11 and 12.

Israel has said it will defend itself against these accusations.

The war began after Hamas militants attacked southern Israeli cities on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 240 others, according to Israeli officials.

Since then, Israel has launched an air, land and sea campaign in Gaza, killing more than 22,300 Palestinians, two-thirds of them children and women, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled territory.

The vast majority of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have been forced to flee their homes and take refuge in the south of the enclave./ REL
