President Joe Biden will kick off the year by campaigning at historically significant sites commemorating major events, such as the third anniversary of the deadly attack on the Capitol. He will also visit a Church in South Carolina where a white American gunman killed African-American worshipers. During these visits, he is expected to argue that the presidential elections to be held this year can determine the fate of American democracy.
On Saturday, President Biden will go to Valley Forge, an area in Pennsylvania where George Washington and the Continental Army spent a bleak winter nearly 250 years ago. There, he will decry former President Donald Trump's role in inciting his supporters who stormed the US Congress in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Two days later, the President will visit Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston where nine people were gunned down in June 2015 by a white supremacist.
During these two visits, he will characterize his predecessor as a serious threat to the principles on which the country was founded, arguing that Mr. Trump will undermine American democracy if he wins a second term. Former President Trump has a deep lead among the candidates trying to secure the Republican Party nomination.
"We are running the campaign with the idea that the fate of our democracy depends on the election, because it is," Mr. Biden's re-election campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, said in a conference call with reporters.
Mr Trump, who faces 91 criminal charges over allegations that he tried to overturn Mr Biden's victory, has argued that it is Democrats who are trying to undermine democracy by using the legal system to derail his main rival's campaign. of the president.
"Joe Biden and his allies are a real threat to our democracy," Mr. Trump's top campaign advisers, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles, wrote in a memo this week. "In fact, in a way never seen before in our history, they are waging a war against him."
President Biden's mention of national traumas, often calling for action, has become his political calling card. Tragedy has defined the president's own life, from the 1972 car accident that killed his first wife and infant daughter to the death of son Beau from brain cancer at age 46 in 2015.
In 2020, Mr. Biden won for the first time promising to heal the "soul of the nation" after saying that what prompted him to run for president was seeing hate groups march in Charlottesville, Virginia, with torches and the swastika in 2017.
Instead of promising to bridge the country's deep political divisions, as he did four years ago, President Biden will highlight how former President Trump and key supporters of his Make America Great Again movement pose existential threats.
"The leading candidate of a major party in the United States is running for president so that he can systematically dismantle and destroy our democracy," said Michael Tyler, director of communications for President Biden's campaign.
Even if another candidate beats Mr. Trump in the Republican primary, Mr. Biden's team argues that the winner would be very similar to the former president and that the campaign themes would be similar.
Most Americans are worried about the future of democracy in the upcoming election, although what they consider threats to democracy depends on their political leanings.
Mr. Biden's campaign also promised to mobilize widely to mark Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide for nearly 50 years before the high court overturned the ruling in June 2022.
Mr. Biden's team has argued that abortion rights and democracy are intertwined in the upcoming election, citing warnings from President Trump and what Democrats call "MAGA extremists." According to Democrats, it was the Republican fight against abortion that helped the Democrats defy historical precedent by holding the majority in the Senate and losing only by a small margin in the House of Representatives to the Republicans in the November 2022 congressional elections./ VOA
