New indictment against former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan

A court in Pakistan on Wednesday indicted jailed former prime minister Imran Khan for insulting Election Commission officials, his defense lawyer, Naeem Haider Panjutha, announced.

The indictment is another blow to Khan, who is serving a prison sentence for corruption and faces several other legal cases.

It rose shortly after the Electoral Commission rejected Khan's candidacy, making it impossible for him to run in the February 8 parliamentary elections.

Khan is accused of calling Election Commission chairman Sikandar Sultan Rajaa and other officials "personal servants" of former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif replaced Khan in April 2022 after he was ousted from power through a no-confidence vote in Parliament by his political opponents. Since then, government agencies have pursued him in the courts.

A former cricketer, the 71-year-old is Pakistan's best-known opposition figure.

Naeem Haider Panjutha said Khan pleaded not guilty during the hearing when the charge was read to him.

A similar indictment was also brought against one of Khan's former deputies, Faëad Chaudhry.

Election officials said they did not accept Khan's candidacy because of his conviction for corruption./ REL
