The international community must impose a solution to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as the warring parties will never be able to reconcile, the European Union's diplomacy chief, Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday.

"I believe that we have learned in these 30 years that the solution must be binding from the outside, because the two sides will never be able to reach an agreement ," said Borrell in Lisbon.

He warned that "if this tragedy does not end soon, the entire Middle East will burn."

The war reached Lebanon on Tuesday with the killing of Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut by a drone strike.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied that it has killed the number two of Hamas - the radical Palestinian group that the United States and the European Union have declared a terrorist organization.

His killing was a sign that the now quarterly war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is spreading throughout the region.

"What happened yesterday with the death of one of the leaders of Hamas is another factor that can promote the escalation of the conflict", stressed Borrelli, adding that he will visit the Middle East, including Lebanon, to "find ways" for the solution of the conflict.

The war began after Hamas militants attacked southern Israeli cities on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 240 others, according to Israeli officials.

Since then, Israel has launched an air, land and sea campaign in Gaza, killing more than 22,300 Palestinians, two-thirds of them children and women, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled territory./ REL
