A Russian governor said Wednesday that he has ordered the rebuilding of nine houses in a Russian village that was accidentally bombed by a Russian military plane.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, when the Russian news agency RIA quoted the Defense Ministry as reporting "abnormal discharge of ammunition from a military aircraft" over the village of Petropovlovka in southern Voronezh region.

Governor Alexander Gusev said nine houses would be rebuilt as soon as possible, and that a local school, an art center and an administrative building were also damaged.

No fatalities were reported, but four people sought help for minor injuries, he said.

Five cars and a tractor were also damaged, and their owners will receive compensation, according to him.

"No resident will be left without assistance. We will support everyone as soon as possible", said Gusev.

Russian authorities did not say what caused the incident. While the damage was limited, the incident embarrassed the Russian military and came at a time when Russia's southern regions bordering Ukraine are on alert for bombings.

Over the New Year period, Russia carried out its biggest missile and drone attacks in Ukraine since it launched its invasion in February 2022.

On Saturday, 25 people were killed in Belgorod, near the border, in the deadliest Ukrainian attack in Russia, officials said./ REL
