The White House hopes for a cease-fire in Gaza

Yahya Sinwar, the slain leader of Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — was an obstacle to reaching a ceasefire in the war in Gaza.

His killing by the Israeli military represents a "turning point" that could accelerate the process of talks to end the war, said White House national security spokesman John Kirby.

Sinwar, named as the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, was killed in southern Gaza by an Israeli strike on October 17. His killing represents a major victory for Israel as the war in Gaza continues.

"We believe that finding a solution to end the war is critical, and we also believe that Sinwari's death may provide a turning point in reaching that solution," Kirby said.

Despite the United States' optimism, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on October 18 vowed that Israel would continue the war in Gaza and Lebanon, suggesting that Sinwar's killing would not have much effect on ending the war, at least not for a while. recent period of time.

For months the US, Israel's main backer, has been working to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, but these efforts have so far failed.

Kirby said there are currently no talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and said he could not provide a date for when talks would resume.

During the attack on October 7 last year, Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people – mostly civilians – in southern Israel and kidnapped nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.

In parallel with the war in Gaza, Israel is also fighting in Lebanon with Hezbollah, the militant group and political party that controls most of southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has been declared a terrorist organization by the US, while the EU blacklists its political wing. The Hezbollah party has seats in the Lebanese Parliament./ REL
