Large quantities of cocaine are found on the beaches of the North Sea

Cocaine is increasingly being found on beaches along the North Sea and the English Channel, Belgian media reports. The increase is attributed to a trend of drop-offs, where large ships dump their drug cargo overboard for smaller ships to pick up later.

From September 16 to October 15, Belgian customs led an international operation against maritime drug smuggling, known as Operation White Sea IV. During this operation, the authorities seized a total of 930 kilograms of cocaine and nearly 5 tons of hashish. Four people were arrested in connection with the smuggling activity.

The operation spanned the European west coast, the Channel, the North Sea and various seaports. Officers from twelve European countries participated under the auspices of Europol's EMPACT platform (European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats). The operation used a variety of resources, including divers, helicopters, and numerous coast guard aircraft and ships.

In just one month, this coordinated effort screened more than 500 vessels, with 73 vessels undergoing full inspections. While the main focus was on so-called releases, the operation also tackled other forms of drug smuggling, including transporting drugs on other ships or hiding them inside the hull of a ship.
