Britain convenes a meeting at the UN on Gaza/ Considers the sanctioning of

Great Britain and France have called an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Britain is also considering sanctioning two Israeli ministers, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Wednesday.

Food supplies to Gaza have plummeted in recent weeks after Israeli authorities imposed new customs rules. This situation prompted the US to warn Israel that, if it does not improve the situation, it could face a cut in military aid from it.

"We are constantly reflecting on these with our partners," Starmer told Parliament when asked about the situation in Gaza.

"It has been needed for a long time and it is urgently needed now to introduce more aid to Gaza," he said.

Britain's foreign secretary, David Lammy, said in a statement that Israel must ensure that civilians are protected and that roads are open to allow vital aid to pass through. He emphasized that these issues will be discussed at the UN meeting.

Starmer also pointed out that Britain is considering sanctioning Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Iamar Ben-Gvir over their comments about the conflict.

Former Foreign Secretary David Cameron had also considered sanctioning the pair before the Conservative Party lost the election in June.

Asked whether the Government would sanction Smotrich, who said starving civilians in Gaza could be justified, and Ben-Gvir, who said those responsible for settler violence in the West Bank were heroes, Starmer said: "We are looking into this, because these are, of course, disgusting comments."

"Israel must take all possible steps to avoid killing civilians, allow far greater amounts of aid to Gaza and enable UN partners to operate effectively," Starmer said. / REL
