North Korea destroyed parts of roads and railway lines on its side of the border with South Korea on Tuesday, prompting the South's military to deploy as a warning.

Pyongyang said last week it would completely sever inter-Korean roads and rail lines and further fortify areas on its side of the border.

Around noon on Tuesday, several northern sections of roads and railway lines connecting the North to the South were destroyed, South Korea's General Staff said.

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which is responsible for border issues, condemned the incident as a violation of past agreements between the two Koreas.

"It is unfortunate that North Korea is constantly behaving in such a backward manner," said the spokesman of this Ministry, Koo Byoung-sam.

Tensions rose after the North last week accused Seoul of sending drones over Pyongyang.

North Korea said the drones distributed "a large number" of leaflets against the North. Kim Yo Jon, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, warned on Tuesday that Seoul would "pay dearly".

The South Korean government has not said whether its military or civilians sent drones to Pyongyang.

In response to the destruction of parts of the road, South Korea's military fired weapons south of the military demarcation line, although there was no damage to the southern part of the border, Seoul said.

South Korea has said that the roads and railway lines were built with its equipment and materials worth $132.9 million, given in the form of loans, and that North Korea is obligated to repay the loan debt.

North and South Korea are still technically at war, as the 1950-1953 war between them ended in a truce, not a peace treaty./ REL
