EU sanctions Iranian officials and companies for supplying Russia with drones

The European Union imposed sanctions on Iran's deputy defense minister, senior leaders of Iran's Revolutionary Guard and three airline companies for their involvement in supplying Russia with drones, missiles and other equipment used in its war against Ukraine.

Deputy Defense Minister Seyed Hamzeh Ghalandari is one of seven officials who have been banned from entering Europe and whose assets and properties have been frozen. The EU said he was "involved in the development of Iran's drone and missile program", given his senior role in the defense establishment.

The properties of Iran Air, Mahan Air and Saha Airlines were frozen. The EU said its planes are "repeatedly used to transport Iranian-made drones and other similar technology in Russia, which have been used in Russia's aggression against Ukraine."

The foreign ministers of EU member states supported the sanctions during the meeting in Luxembourg.

In March, the EU warned that "if Iran transfers ballistic missiles and similar technology to Russia for use against Ukraine, the EU will be ready to respond quickly, including with new and severe restrictive measures."

EU member states, with the exception of Hungary, since the beginning of Russia's attack in February 2022 have supplied Ukraine with weaponry and given it economic aid and other aid worth 118 billion euros./VOA
