Israel confirms killing of Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar

Israel's foreign minister has confirmed that Israeli troops have killed senior Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, one of the masterminds of last year's attack on Israel that killed more than 1,000 people and took around 300 hostages. .

Mr. Sinwar has been at the top of Israel's most wanted lists since the war between Israel and Hamas began last October. His elimination is a powerful blow to the militant group. Until the publication of the news, the Hamas organization has not confirmed the death of its leader.

Israel's foreign policy chief, Israel Katz, called Mr. Sinwar's killing "a military and moral achievement for the Israeli army."

"The killing of Sinwar will create the opportunity to immediately release the hostages and bring about a change that will lead to a new reality in Gaza without Hamas and without Iranian control," he said in a statement.
